Bio:

I was born in Thionville, France, in 1982, to a socializing nurse and perfect cook, and a civil engineering urban drawings drafter and bass guitar player, themselves spawned from an Ukranian refugee and a coal miner, a home nanny and an architectural painter. I received a M. Eng. degree from Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs du Mans (ENSIM) at Université du Maine, France, in 2005, where I studied Acoustics and Metrology (the Science of Sensors). As final requirement for these studies, I tried to develop artistically-inclined sensors for Eowave, a spin-off of Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique Musique (IRCAM). I graduated a M. Sc. entitled "Cognition, Creation and Learning Engineering (IC2A)", specialization in "Art, Science, Technology (AST)" from Institut National Polytechnique de Grenoble (INPG) and the Association for the Creation and Research on Expression Tools (ACROE), France, in 2006, including visiting research about sound synthesis methods at the Music Technology group of McGill University, Montreal, Canada, jointly with Professors Philippe Depalle (McGill), Marcelo Wanderley (McGill) and Claude Cadoz (ACROE). In October 2006, I joined the Communication and Remote Sensing Lab (TELE) of Université catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain), Belgium. I contributed to the eNTERFACE workshops and summer schools on multimodal user interfaces as participant in 2007 and project coordinator in 2009 and 2010. In September 2010, I joined the Circuit Theory and Signal Processing Lab (TCTS) lab from University of Mons (UMONS), to obtain my PhD degree in February 2015, with Professors Thierry Dutoit (UMONS/TCTS) and Jean Vanderdonckt (UCLouvain-ISYS). I have been a full-time contributor to the numediart Research Program on Digital Art Technologies since 2008 (that became the numediart Institute) and one core developer of the MediaCycle framework since 2010. Until the end of Mons 2015 European Capital of Culture, I am gonna work on providing a solution for authoring interactive comic books augmented with sound, thanks to a funding obtained from the GREENTIC call (as in sustainable information and communication technologies) from the Walloon Region of Belgium.

Research:

My current purpose is to design user interfaces (tangible input and information visualization) for browsing media content (audio+video) organized by similarity. Here follows a selection of my collaborated contributions within numediart projects featuring the MediaCycle framework for media content organization by similarity (2008-present), ordered antichronologically:

PhD: Designing interaction for browsing media collections (by similarity)

abstract: Sound designers source sounds in massive and heavily tagged collections. When searching for media content, once queries are filtered by keywords, hundreds of items are left to be reviewed. How can we present these results efficiently? This doctoral work aims at improving the usability of browsers of media collections by blending techniques from multimedia information retrieval (MIR) and human-computer interaction (HCI). We produced an in-depth state-of-the-art on media browsers. We overviewed HCI and MIR techniques that support our work: organization by content-based similarity (MIR), information visualization and gestural interaction (HCI). We developed the MediaCycle framework for organization by content-based similarity and the DeviceCycle toolbox for rapid prototyping of gestural interaction, both facilitated the design of several media browsers. We evaluated the usability of some of our media browsers. Our main contribution is AudioMetro, an interactive visualization of sound collections. Sounds are represented by content-based glyphs, mapping perceptual sharpness (audio) to brightness and contour (visual). These glyphs are positioned in a starfield display using Student t-distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (tSNE) for dimension reduction, then a proximity grid optimized for preserving direct neighbors. Known-item search evaluation shows that our technique significantly outperforms a grid of sounds represented by dots and ordered by filename.

    Auracle @ eNTERFACE'14

contribs: coordinating the project with Nicolas Riche. Auracle aims at studying the mutual influence of audio and visual cues on spectators of audiovisual media content: feature films, animation movies, video games recordings by undertaking eye tracking user experiments on a database of such content. Based on the results, models and algorithms of the relation between sound and image may be refined and their predictions compared with actual gaze fixations recorded from participants. The media and fixations database will be released for free. The results of such analyses may serve to breed new crossover media genres featuring sound and moving images.
